Passed over again?
You have attended the practices and learned the material but you STILL
didn't get the Solo or the Spot in the choreography that you wanted. Its
just not fair!! Below are some tips that will help you win your coveted
position by making a lasting impression on your Dance Companies' Artistic
Director.
1. Make your intentions known. It is OK to tell your Director that
you would really like a position in the region you want so long as you
also show by your actions that you are going to work hard to get the spot.
2. Never Sit Down. So other Dancers are setting choreography for
the Dance number you want to be in? Is this your chance to sit down in the
corner or take a nap? Not if you want to show your enthusiasm and
dedication to learning the dance. Practice the steps in back or to the
side without disrupting the class. Choose another dancers spot in the
choreography and shadow that person through the movements. Your Director
will notice your enthusiasm. Gauranteed!
3. What does the Director Want? Sit back at practice and watch what
is going on with the movement. Good Directors often have a theme or look
they are trying to create. Is the position you want a part of this theme?
If so tailor your movements and eneergy towards fitting in to the big
picture rather than trying to stand out.
4. Ask. OK so you have done all of the above and still nothing. Ask
your Director in private how you can improve your self enough to be
placed. Listen and consider all advice that you recieve. If your Director
gives you concrete things to do like " you need to work on this paso" or
"your timing is off" . Take the music home and practice.
Incorporating these step into your everyday approach to practice will make
you a better performer and an asset to your Group. Follow these steps and
the next time you are up for the audition or you are sure to earn the spot
you want.
Signed. Jose' - Director
