The Performer's Edge

Forklorico for Life!!
We all know them. Those few veterano folkloristas who have been dancing forever. 10, 20, even 30 years!! So how do they do it in an arte where the most people come and go in a few practices? Here are a few of the keys to making your folklorico and dance career long and happy.

1) Learn more than the zapateado. Researching the history of the dances will take you to a place and time where people and their cultura were different. Ask more of your Directors than just pasos. The deeper you dig, the more meaningful your learning becomes.

2) You are who your friends are. So find a group of other dancers and hang out. Make your love of folklorico a way to find others with similar interest and values. You will be surprised how many of us there are out there once you find the right community. Many dance organizations hold bailes and other social events outside of practice. If your does not, offer to organize one.

3) Live a healthy lifestyle. Like it or not, a commitment to folklorico means a commitment to being fit. Every veteran folklorista has made a decision to work out and eat healthy for the long run. Not only does dance in general require movement and coordination, but eating and exercising will help you be a healthier person in every aspect of your life.

4) Choose wisely. Careers and significant others that is. The #1 reason given for dropping out of dance is..............(drum roll please). My job won’ let me participate. #2 reason, my boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse doesn’t like it or gets jealous. Choose your poison, but either can create difficulties in your ability to attend practices and rehearsals.

5) Take the Breaks you Need. We all need times away from dance to attend to personal issues, deal with work or school, or just to veg out. Veteran dancers know that recharging your battery from time to time will mean a greater appreciation for the periods you do dance.

6) Your dance Company is your provider. Of information about your arte, of organized activities, and of performance venues. If you are not getting what you need from your Grupo, its’ time to look elsewhere or try to create changes within your organization. Each dance organization has its’ own personality in style. Check out other local Groups in your area. You may find just the right one to keep your interest and challenge you for the long haul.

A few well thought out approaches to your lifestyle will pay off in the long run as you enjoy many years as a folklorista.
