The Performer's Edge

How can I manage it all?

As the busy Spring performing Season approaches and the demands on folkloristas increase it can seem overwhelming. Extra practices to set shows, 5 de Mayo presentations, community Festivals and fairs. How do I balance the needs of my home and work life with my passion for folklorico ? Below are a few tested organizational methods to keep you on top of the stresses and make sure you are able to participate and make living.

1) Use the Calendar. Professionals in every field will tell you that in order to ensure you achieve your goals you must schedule meetings and steps toward that goal and stick to your plan. For folkloristas, make sure you know when shows will be set, what the time commitments are, and plan accordingly.

2) Be Up Front. With your other commitments and make sure that your Directors and other Dance team members know when you will be absent. This will ensure that everyone know that you are a team player and will reduce tensions within your group.

3) Know your limits. Lets face it, as much as we would like to be involved on all of those great folklorico related trips and shows, we all have other lives. Be honest with yourself about what your capable of committing yourself to. When in doubt, talk to your Director and ask their opinion on whether your schedule conflicts mean that you should opt out of certain events.

4) Talk it up. Believe it or not, many employers, professors, and significant others are very supportive of your passion for Mexican Dance. Your stated commitment to dancing and your being open about what it means to you will help persuade others to give you that extra time at lunch or to let you turn in that written exam early.

5) Seasonal Madness. Many Folklorico Groups organize their bigger presentations around performing Seasons. It’s a safe bet that every year there are months which are busier than others. If possible, plan that extra work project, lengthy absence from practice, or other personal commitment for the off season.

Balance is the key to making your folklorico and dance career happy. Following these few tips can keep you on top of the many stressors of a busy presenting season.
